Previous Work

Medical Writer at Health Management Solutions, Inc.

The Medical Writer position with Health Management Solutions, Inc. was a full-time position that required post-graduate-level experience in the biological or health sciences. Rebecca was the lead writer in the small, continuing medical education (CME) company, and she reported to the Managing Director. The primary responsibilities were to compose CME manuscripts and peer-reviewed articles based on transcripts, presentations, interviews, and PowerPoint presentations. The ability to learn new material quickly was essential, as the diverse topics addressed include: oncology, dermatology, neurobiology, anesthesiology, nephrology, pulmonology, ophthalmology, urology, and physiatry.  Other responsibilities included developing proposals for symposia and content for round table and advisory board discussions, composing executive summary reports, and liaising with experts in various medical specialties (via phone, email, and in-person) to create and revise manuscripts and presentations. Also, the role required negotiating with journal editors during the peer-review manuscript submission process and liaising with clients on content for manuscripts, presentations, and meetings.

Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL (8/03-8/04)

Using single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) information, I mapped the genomic location of C. elegans pat-9, a zinc-finger protein critical for muscle development

Doctoral Candidate, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL (6/98-1/03)

I investigated the structure-function relationship pf mTOR via:

  • Protein expression & purification from E.coli & cell culture
  • Immunofluorescent cell staining
  • Affinity & column chromatography
  • Confocal microscopy
  • Gel electrophoresis
  • Kinase assays
  • Cloning & sub-cloning
  • Co-immunoprecipitation
  • DNA sequencing
  • Western Analysis
  • PCR

Research Assistant, University of Illinois, Urbana, IL (5/96-5/98)

I characterized the structural properties and binding of full-length and truncated mutants of HMG-D and IRE-ABP proteins to linear and pre-bent DNA in vitro via:

  • Gel electrophoresis
  • Radioisotope labeling of DNA
  • DNA purification
  • Circularization assays
  • Hydroxy radical footprinting
  • On-rate and off-rate binding assays
